Banting is a small, bowl-shaped lunar impact crater located near the middle of the Mare Serenitatis. The lunar mare in the vicinity is flat and nearly devoid of features of interest.

This crater was previously identified as Linné E before 1973, when it was renamed by the International Astronomical Union in honour of Frederick Banting's contributions to medicine. Linné itself lies to the west-northwest.
